There are several important information that maybe some of you wanted to know. Some of them are:
1. U of G maybe the best place for people who want to pursue in life sciences studies such as veterinary medicine biochemistry, food science and biotechnology. For engineering students, it is not advisable for you to further studies over here because they only offer engineering majors that deal with biological restrictions such as environmental engineering, biophysics, etc. I'm pretty sure JPA doesn't offer any kind of these engineering majors. You guys can check further details about programs that being offered from this link.(B.Sc Academic Advising)
2. UoG is a medium-sized university. The main campus is in Guelph itself and it's just 10minutes away from downtown by using public transports (Guelph transit)
3. Guelph is pretty much a quiet and peaceful town compared to Toronto. Guelph is 1 1/2 hour journey by using public transport.
4. U of G are dedicated to cultivating the essentials for our quality of life - water, food, environment, animal and human health, community, commerce, culture and learning.
5. Most of you may wonder about residence, you can decide whether to stay on-campus or off-campus. Both have it's own pro's and con's though.
On-Campus Living
Pros:
- For staying on-campus, you'll get the chance to meet all kinds of people from different background and also getting to know about Canadian culture.
- Plus, on-campus residence also have plenty of food's choices in case some of you who are too lazy to cook by your own during the semester. We also have halal dishes in on-campus restaurant.
- Besides that, it will be easy for you to go to class because it's really close to the campus(5minutes walk), this will benefit you a lot especially during winter season. The weather gets too cold sometimes. Or you can get yourself a bicycle.
- For muslims, there is a small musolla in University Centre(UC), so you don't have any problems to perform prayers. And also the Juma'ah prayer also being performed in UC, so you can just attend the prayers over there.
Cons:
- Pretty expensive fees for one whole semester residence application(4months).
- South campus residence, I considered it as the loudest residence. Sometimes it get too loud, until you can not study in your own room due to loud sound created from other students. So, in the application form, better avoid yourself from applying this part of residence.
- In your tuition fees, you also paid for the student's bus pass. So, for some of you who may wanted to stay on-campus, maybe or maybe not, use the pass less frequent from other student who staying off-campus.
Off-Campus Living:
Pros:
- The rent is way cheaper than on-campus. So that's mean you can SAVE some money for other purposes) travelling, shopping, etc). So the average rent is CAD450, including utilities.(Internet, electric bill, rent, etc.)
- When you live off-campus, you will become more independent, in terms of exploring the whole part of the cities, and using the public transport frequently which is the best method to move around in Guelph.
- The people here are very friendly and nice, you can get mixed around with the community and get involved in the community event that usually being held every month, excluding during winter season.
- You can grab your groceries from many kinds of market, (Nofrills, Zehr's, Metro, Food Basics, Walmart, Fresh&Co., etc.). From my experience, we always buy Halal chicken and meat from Nofrills because it's the cheapest that we can get :).
Cons:
- You may get swayed away by the comfortable off-campus life, so maybe some of you will get behind from study due to procrastination and lack of discipline.
- So, as a student who studying abroad, you should prepared yourself avoid from this kind of bad attitudes that will affect your grade, seriously.
- During winter season, you may find it's hard to go to the school due to extreme coldness in Canada, that make you tends to skip the class, these are the challenges that you must fight due to off-campus residence which is not too far away from the campus(Just 10-15 minutes travel by public transport)
