Thanks for having good discussions in OUAC & University Choices FAQs Post. The section will be summarized here, and further questions are welcomed here:
Question #1:
So, Ive decided to majoring in International Relations and Anthropology as my minor. What Canadian Universities do you think would be good for me to enter?
I heard that Toronto is the best for Social Sciences, is that true?
Discussions Q1:
everjihad: I guess, McGill is also best for Social science. But undeniable it also true that Uoft also have good reputation for Social Science course.
sweetbainin: I heard that UBC is actually one of the best for social sciences along with McGill university. I am not being bias here just because i attend UBC, definitely not. But i heard that it is so. UofT is also good for it. One of my friends attending UBC also said that UBC offers very good political sciences courses. Its up to u in the end.
Question #2:
Discussions Q2:
edkofarah: x terlalu high demand: trent University, Dalhousie university, university of saskatchewan.
most of these uni senang gak nak masuk...
amiir: salam kepada org yg bertanya..
antara U yg sng nk masuk adalah UofT..walaupun UofT antara U yg gempaq, tp nk msok mmg senang..average 80 jek..itu utk taun lepas..taun neyh xtaw la berape pulak tp maybe tinggi sket bcoz UofT skang no.8 worldwide..
*tp idup kt sini mmg hectic giler..klu nk cabaran besar masok la UofT..haha
----dr student Uoft first year ;)----
everjihad: setaunya, yg tak high demant Trent University dan Carleton University. IELTS tak berapa tinggi. rasanya boleh cari post dekat blog anasfaris. Dia dah buat research dah dulu univ mane yg demanding ke x.
sweetbainin: Actually, semua uni snang nak masuk. As long as u meet JPA or MARA's requirement that is (make sure IELTS above 6.5). I know many students last year who was accepted into all the universities that they applied for. Again, asalkan memuaskan syarat2 pihak sponsor, you will have no problem at all.
Question #3:
Why we have this OUAC application to go through? To be specific, what's the purpose? I really wanna know =)sorry if those questions seems insensible to you.
urmm, can you suggest to me some good business schools in Canada?
Discussion Q3:
edkofarah: OUAC stands for Ontario Universities Application Center- khas untuk apply uni in Ontario Province jer. Marks ICPU akan dihantar kepada OUAC and then diorg akan forward to the applied uni..uni outside Ontario have to deal with pihak university sendiri.
Discussions Q1:

ibnuazlan: In my personal opinion, it's not a good practice to always hope for the easy path. Don't make it a habit.
Choose the best university that offers the program that you are interested in applying, based on your ICPU results. Period. Don't think too much about the demand because if the university isn't going to put that load on you, most probably your job will. And definitely don't go to a particular university just because "my friends are going there".
It may be cliche, but the old saying, "Bersusah-susah dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian" has more truth in it than you think.
All the best in your future endeavours. My apologies is my wordings are harsh. Know that I didn't intend to hurt anybody's feelings. I speak based on experience.
Question #3:
Why we have this OUAC application to go through? To be specific, what's the purpose? I really wanna know =)sorry if those questions seems insensible to you.
Discussion Q3:
edkofarah: OUAC stands for Ontario Universities Application Center- khas untuk apply uni in Ontario Province jer. Marks ICPU akan dihantar kepada OUAC and then diorg akan forward to the applied uni..uni outside Ontario have to deal with pihak university sendiri.
sweetbainin: OUAC makes it easier for students to apply for all the universities in Ontario province rather than painstakingly try to apply one at a time. Not only that, it makes it easier for them to manage your marks and share it between all the universities rather than making you deal with each university personally. And not only that, instead of having 3 multiple applications, u have to have only one for 3 unis in Ontario. Jimat duit. =D
Pasal business, i cant say. Not a business student. However, business commerce in UBC is one of the toughest to get in. This may show that it could be really good. (i only know about UBC since i am in UBC anyways)
Question #4:
Hi, I'm not sure what undergraduate degree's are suitable for me too apply for so I'll have enough credits when I apply for vet school. How can I check?
Discussion Q4:
sweetbainin: Hi, Try asking the vet students last year by maybe visiting their blogs. Malcolm may be able to help you. I even bet he will be more than willing to help you.
Question #5:
cm ne nk tau universities yg diikhtiraf olh jpa n mara?
Discussion Q5:
Muhamad Syahmi: you can check the university here: http://www.interactive.jpa.gov.my/webinteraktif/frmMainIktiraf.asp
Question #6:
ade x peljr malaysia at u of waterloo n wilfrid laurier?
Discussion Q6:
sweetbainin: At waterloo mmg ada malaysian students. But sponsored malaysian students, no. This is because JPA (and even MARA i think) dont allow us to go to waterloo on account that in waterloo, u have to go through a 5 year course since coop is a must.
Question #7:
For ouac, when do we have to pay the fees? After we submit the apllication, or wut?
Discussion Q7:
Muhamad Syahmi: you can apply first, and pay the fees later , but if you want to review your application, you need to pay the fees. However, you still need to pay the fees before the deadline.
Question #8:
nak tny..if x lepas cutting point jpa ni kan..nnt kn g mn la??
Discussion Q8:
qayyum: kalo x lepas.. selalunya jpa bg sambung pengajian in malaysia's univeristy.. however, since icpu ends after uni kerajaan application da ttp.. so, selalunya pelajar akan pergi ke university swasta..
sweetbainin: Tlg la jgn pikirkan langsung kemungkinan perkara itu berlaku. Work hard for your best and think positively. Ape yg akan jadik akan datang, pikirkan di masa hadapan. Not now when u can still work it out.
Question #9:
which university in canada is the best place for electrical engineering?
Discussion Q9:
qayyum: Ok, electrical engineering is under egineering course.. So, look for the best university that has the best engineering school.. And here is the list rank in descending order according to :
1) University of Toronto
2) University of British Columbia
3) McGill University
4) University of Alberta
5) McMAster University
However, these universities are based on a website. (http://www.usnews.com/articles/education/worlds-best-universities/2009/10/20/worlds-best-universities-engineering-and-it-universities.html)
Question #10:
Is the university will give the conditional offer...based on the 1st sem result..or 2nd sem mid term result???
Discussion Q10:
qayyum: yes, the university will offera conditional offer based on ur first sem result.. and u have to get the minimum mark required in the conditional offer based on ur first and second sem..
AmmarX: As for conditional offer, it is an offer. But there are several conditions that you have to fulfill before you got the admittance into the university. It is not a guaranteed spot in the first place though.
Question #11:
boleh x tolong listkan uni2x yang ader students from our country especially for engineering courses r....
Discussion #11:
AmmarX: The list of universities with Malaysian sponsored students are;
University of Alberta
University of Calgary
Carleton University
Dalhousie University
University of Guelph
McGill
McMaster University
University of Ottawa
Queens University
Ryerson University
University of Saskatchewan
University of Toronto
Trent University
UBC
University of New Brunswick
Question #12:
boleh ke kite dapat scholarship provided by those universities???
jpa x kesah ke?
Discussion Q12:
AmmarX: About scholarships yg University bagi, from my experience, JPA x kisah. But bagi MARA students, U guys kena buat surat untuk inform MARA yg University bagi scholarship.
Question #13:
how to pay da ouac application fees??
No discussion yet for Q13.
Question #14:
which university have da most malay students??
Discussion Q14:
akmal fahmi: Uni with the most Malay? Carleton University is your answer. With baby-like challenge in this university, you will have a very great time spending your money here. But if u like the hardcore type challenge, feel free to choose Toronto. Caution, this university is for the strong hearted only. Proceed with care.
Well, you know how baby can grow too right. So, the challenges in Carleton will grow exponentially with year.
aiman azlan: The most important thing is not to follow where your friends go. Don't make that the factor in your choice. Look for quality.
Mr. Muhammad: Don't choose Carleton University if you intend to improve your english.
Don Hambali: hahaha... ak pon nk post something gak kat sini... wait, the advise that i can give u guys who wanna listen to me advise is that go to the uni that most of ur best frends go... no offence aiman but i do think that frends are really undeniably important when u r so far away from ur freaking home...maybe u can say that u can live without ur frends... but trust me, once u get here - without frends, in which i mean close frends, u will regret the decision u made in the first place... i noe this kind of pain in the ass becoz i am the guy who made his decision to go to the uni that he wanted and not to the uni that most of his good frends go becoz he thought that his decision is the best... well, IT IS NOT!!! and i regret now, i regret it everyday... its not about the name that u shud be after... its the environment... a lot of good frends around to care and remind u always is definitely a good environment... to me at least...
sorry for being such a naive person... but thats wat i think...
akmal fahmi: I agree with everything that Mr. Muhammad and Mr. Don said. Don, nice reasoning. If you think you could survive alone, think again.
takcoollah.zuhair: yeh its true.. living in toronto may not be that easy, but its not all about acedemic.. its about living, the way u live ur life..there'r some advantages in toronto too.. lol>,<
Question #15:
i know that we can change or add our personal details in a program that we'd choose..
-but can we delete the application that we've made.. -i mean, if we'd added one university in the application, can we delete it??
No discussion yet for question Q15.
Question #16:
for ouac, we can apply as many universities as we wish. So,let's say if we apply for 3 universities, is there any possibilities to get the offers from those three universities, or only one university among all?
Discussion Q16:
amiir: yup it's possible to get all three offers from OUAC application if you have an excellent grade.
HOWEVER, you are allowed to choose ONE of them only. so when you're making decision, make sure you choose the best uni that fit with ur course..
Question #17:
course engineering pe yg ade demand mse skrg??...klu nk kte mechanical...cm da rmai kt msia nih...ta kesa la kt dlm @ luar...btw,...kt mne bagus utk buat environmental @ geological engineering???...
No discussion yet for Q17.
Question #18:
I will further my studies in degree of business administration or pentadbiran perniagaan. (according to JPA scholarship) However i am now having difficulties in choosing the field as most of the business schools in Canada only offer B.Comm. instead of B.business administration. I am wondering whether is it the same if i choose B.Comm instead of BBA cause i scare JPA wont recognise the degree(B.Comm.)
No discussion yet for Q18.
Question #19:
Should I choose to live in the resident provided by the university?
Discussion Q19:
akmal fahmi: One wise word, "NO". If you think you don't need to get back to Malaysia in your first year, then feel free to choose the resident. The reason? Well, you will spend 90% of your monthly allowance to pay for the resident only.
Question #20:
ouac sebenarnya apa?? apakah perbezaannya dgn application direct ke universiti yang kita nak?
Discussion Q20:
Amemerudin Abey: ouac ni..
application mcm ko apply u kpm kt mesia..
ko bole apply 3 u dalam 1 payment
Question #21:
In general, what university good for you?
Discussion Q21:
everjihad: well, try ask yourself what are you finding for university? reputation? environement? it's all up to you to decide your goal and interest.
doesn't mean good university such university taht have high rank is good for you. not necessarily. but if u r person that love challenges, come in and get urself challenged.
some might feel, it's just enough as long they get university abroad, it doesn't necessarily which univ they are going. while some also might thing, 'alang2 dah pegi jauh, baik pegi univ yg bagus2, ada rank..'..
last but not least, consider jugak university yg nak pergi ni, is it really what you want? convinced u enough?
be sure with that so that you will not regret with any decision you make today. jangan merungut bila dah masuk sini, workload bnykla and so on..masa yg ada, research betul2. so that u are aware and know what to expect.
pemilihan universiti agak penting. it determine how your life will be in future. for muslims, don't forget to do istikharah while choosing which university will be your final choice. after all, just have faith in Him that that the best for you. tawakkal 'alallah. nothing will worry or make you down as Allah always give the best. the only thing, have we give the best we can?
err.maaf. membebel pulak kat sini.
all da best to u guys. happy choosing your future. May God helps u.
Question #22:
How much do i have to pay for OUAC? does it depends on d number of unis i apply to?
and any seniors doing eng sc? mind sharing some experience on d course?

Q#13: Credit card. Kept the receipt for your reference and to claim from MARA/JPA.
Q#22: If I'm not mistaken, we have to pay an amount for all the three universities.
For an additional application for another U in ON, there is a specific amount for each U. I guess it would be 35cad/U. So, you can apply many universities as U want in ON (OUAC). Even Anas applied 5 Universities. =p
So, when you want to claim from MARA/JPA, consider it to be like this:
1. OUAC (3 Universities)
2. Additional U in OUAC.
3. Additional U in OUAC.
So for OUAC alone, you can apply up to 5 Universities.
To be frank, many Universities will charge a large amount money for the application fee. So, if you not intend to go other U outside than ON, don't waste your money. Even you can claim,
"BUATPA HANG BAZIRKAN DUIT RAKYAT?" =)
Q#17: both environmental and geological enginering under civil or chemical engineering. if it's under civil, sorry to say but you're are not allowed to enroll in that course.
if it's under chemical, I don't know. Sorry again.
Q#22: Syahmi Leh, Eng Science, UofT. Abang Admin, blh x bg ym die x?
Takut ada privacy restriciton lak. hahaha =)
Q#22 : There are currently 3 malaysian studnt doing engSci at UofT. Hmm.. what can i say about engSci is if you like challenge definitelty the course for you.. The minimum addmission into this course is 90 avrg. Most of the subject is advanced a little bit than other normal engineering courses(for first year).
Question #22:
For OUAC, you pay for 3 universities for the price of 1. That's the advantage of using OUAC. Therefore, you can apply to 2 more universities because JPA and MARA (as I understand it) cover your expenses for 3 university applications (OUAC + 2 more unis = 3 applications).
How much you have to pay? Well, in short, each application will cost you roughly CAD100, maybe CAD115. Please note, this is only for application fee. So, for three applications - with OUAC being considered as one application because we pay for 3 universities for the price of 1 - you'll pay roughly CAD300 (CAD100 x 3) or about RM1000. I'm just giving you the rough figures, not the exact ones.
Let me put it in simpler form, you will pay:
1. CAD100 for OUAC (3 universities for the price of 1)
2. CAD100 for one university (in Ontario or outside)
3. CAD100 for one university (in Ontario or outside)
So the total universities that you can apply to and JPA/MARA will cover are 5 universities. You are lucky to have OUAC because with just CAD100, you can apply to 3 universities.
Basically, I'm just repeating the same thing in a different manner so that you can understand.
Pay via credit card or bank draft. I highly recommend that you use credit card because it's much safer. You don't want to take risks with such huge amount of money. If you don't have one, you can use your parents' credit card or a friend's credit card. Remember to keep every receipts that you get so that you can claim from JPA/MARA later.
Now about Eng. Sc., you can ask Ong Shang Koon or Muhamad Syahmi. There are others but these are the two that I know for sure that they are taking Eng. Sc. They are having their exams now. Maybe they can entertain you during the weekends because their last papers is on Friday, December 18.
Things to consider in choosing a university:
1. Program
-obviously you are going to choose a uni that offers the program u wanted.nuff said.
2. Environment( friends,food,entertainment)
-I disagree with aiman. Overseas students should go to a uni with friends(close friends if possible). Dont follow what they do(program tht they take) but at least have someone!! It's ABSOLUTELY depressing to be stuck in a place(even worse, boring place) where you dont have anybody to turn to, to talk or to hang out on a REGULAR basis) I'm saying this bsd from my experience. If this is not possible, find at least a uni that is close to ur friend's uni. That way you can travel back and forth just to meet them...which costs u a lot of money...but its for ur happiness so u wudnt mind abt it...right?
-halal food for muslims is a must. u dont wanna be eating shawarma everytime u go out. I thought downtown toronto has lots of halal food, but I'm wrong. It turns out many halal food are in missisauga and scarborough. Plus, they're cheaper.
-entertainment.as students we should be studying, but... if ur used to living in big cities, consider going to uoft(st george) mcgill or ubc. Having no entertainment is another cause for major depression.hoho. So again, u'll be forced to travel a lot in a year.
3. Cost
- if ur thinking saving money but still want to go to a good uni, consider going to uoft missisauga or scarborough(but also make sure they offer ur program)
- uoft downtown is expensive...and i guess it's the same for other unis in cities.
disclaimer: I'm not responsible if it turned out that my advise causes dissatisfactions, diagreement with what I said or anything that is detrimental to ur future. It's all from my opinion and experiences =D
-uoft 2nd yr student in Poli sci-
@Muhamad Syahmi: admission avg for eng sci is much lower than expected last year~
85+ is possible too, but very unlikely.
But in general, you should ONLY go into eng sci IF and ONLY IF you have an avg of 90+
:D xDXDXD
Question 18:
I asked your question to a senior of mine, a 2nd year U of T Mississauga student in Commerce. Her name is Zuliana. This is what she said:
"In general, BComm n BBA are totally different in terms of the courses taken. I don't really know how to explain here cuz I don't really know the differences myself. Tapi if the problem here is between da student dgn JPA then I think it's not a big deal sbb as long as he/she dlm sastera ikhtisas like me then JPA will accept BComm but make it clear to them that u r taking BComm instead of BBA which is "perdagangan" n bukan "pentadbiran perniagaan" like my case sampai teruk2 kena explain kat JPA hari tu juz bcuz they thought I wrote BBA in my application."
eng sci tuh aper actually??
eng sci stands for engineering science. I heard that eng sci is one of the most toughest major course in North America. That's what I heard at the very first time. How far it is true? Try ask the eng sci pple ..
2 more new questions people:
Question #23 : which U is suitable for nuclear Eng?
Question #24 : ada tak senior yg amek course econs ! and do you guys please suggest any uni ? bila google semua uni pon nampak tempting gila. huu! do you guys know any uni good for econs ? selain u of t and ubc.
econs? mcgill ade.rmi senior yg kalo tak ubc ..pegi situ amik econs.
Question #25 :
jpa bagi students choose ape2 course ke or ade certain degree yang tak diiktiraf? kalau nak buat languages macam english literature ke, linguistic ke, boleh tak? please....bingung ni...thanks~

Question 25:
Any course you take must be endorsed by JPA. Otherwise, your degree will be useless. Ask JPA whether the course you are interested in taking is endorsed by them or not.
Question #26 :
ade reunion pelajar2 batch 08/09 :P
sje nyebok
ibnuazlan > Thanks for helping me to ask the seniors on question 18. :)
So is it mean that JPA scholar with bidang pentadbiran perniagaan cant take B.comm in canada unis? however most of canada unis just offer B.comm instead of B.Business Administration.
If you can, can you please help me ask the seniors about this? Thanks a lot :)
Question 6
- Waterloo ada coop dan JPA tak kasi buat coop, so no JPA scholars or MARA scholars there.
Question 9
- Electrical engineering is the 2nd hardest in UofT after engineering science, I’m not sure about UBC, Waterloo and McGill, definitely UofT Electrical Engineering is regarded as one of the top engineering program in Canada.
Question 22
- Engineering science is regarded as the hardest engineering program in Canada. The workload is very intense and it is very2 competitive. The average entrance mark is around 92 but you can get in with high 80’s.
Pros: Engineering Science is good for doing researches. Basically, you are going to learn a lot of stuffs. More than any other engineering in UofT. Good for doing grad studies. 8/9 majors are offered in the third year, aerospace/biomedical/etc etc
Cons: Basically in the first year, you are going to learn the same stuff as other engineering in UofT, but the exams and tests are much harder and rigorous, and in calculus, you have more proofs and you will enjoy proving delta-epsilon limits and infinite series. They will bell-curve the marks because of low average.
History: before 08/09 batch, 8 students took Engsci, 7, dropped out after first semester/first year, only 1 left (he is doing 2nd year right now).
Question 23
Nuclear Engineering is offered under engineering physics of I’m not mistaken. Carleton, McMaster, UBC have eng physics. In UofT, there is no nuclear engineering specifically but they do offer it in mechanical engineering under energy stream (If I’m not mistaken).
Good luck choosing your universities, kepada yg Muslims jgn lupa buat Istikharah.
- Hafiz, 2nd year UofT student.
I am a Malaysian student here in Toronto doing 3rd year engsci(aero option) and I think it would be nice to share some of my engsci experience here.
So basically EngSci students spend their 1st and 2nd year taking a set of foundation courses specially designed for engineering science and specialize in 1 of the 7 streams in their 3rd and 4th year.(aero, biomed, elec&comp, energy sys, infrastructure, nanoengineering, physics).
The foundation courses in 1st and 2nd year are very intensive and theoretical based. While most of them are very likely to be not-so-relevant to future study, they certainly provide a very good training in approaching scientific n engineering problems. As for engsci math. courses, they involve a lot of rigorous derivations and proof. They are also conducted in a faster pace compared to other math courses available in the faculty.
While most of these courses are more science oriented as opposed to enginering oriented courses taken by other engineering students, 1st and 2nd year engsci students do get fair amount of exposure to engineering in projects and a few engineering-oriented courses.
The highlight of 1st year projects is to design and build a bridge with cardboard using knowledge learnt in structure course. The bridge would then be subject to a loading test to evaluate the accuracy of calculated failure load.
2nd year engsci is even more challenging than 1st year. After more than 50% of students dropped out after first year, the bell curve in 2nd year is significantly less generous than in 1st year, making it hard to survive.
There is a major and time-consuming design project in 2nd year engsci. Students are required to design and build a prototype of a computer-controlled machine to perform a specific task. While this could be a very interesting learning experience, it is extremely challenging, especially when you have to take care of other courses at the same time.
Overall, engineering science program provides students with a very solid basis to conduct scientific research. In fact, many students here in engsci spend their summer holiday working for researchers in the university's labs.
As for post-graduation prospect, most of the engsci graduates proceed to graduate schools. Engsci program has a good reputation among some of the very best research universities in North America (e.g. MIT), which could be an advantage for those who wish to pursue a career in academia or R&D.
